The use of mobile phones has grown faster than Internet usage itself. In 1995, there were 80 million mobile users; by the end of 2014, there were 5.2 billion — a shift form 1% of the population to 73%. About 40% of the mobile phones in use qualify as smartphones. The increase in smartphone use is still “strong but slowing,” Meeker said in her report. The growth rate was 27% in 2013 and slowed to 23% in 2014.
